Off Camera with. . . Cari Champion
Editor’s note: Welcome to Off Camera with. . ., a Front Row series that introduces you to some of the studio anchors and hosts who have recently joined ESPN. Today, we meet Cari Champion, the host of First Take (daily, 10 a.m. ET, ESPN2), who joined ESPN in August 2013.
Hidden Talent: I can ice skate. I wanted to learn how to ice skate when I went on a trip to Banff Springs, Canada, with my mom. It was snowing and around the holidays, so everyone was ice skating. I decided to learn! I’m not a professional skater but I’m a little better than intermediate. Living in warm climates didn’t allow me to flourish but I still enjoy skating when I can, especially living in Connecticut.
Favorite Quote: “No means not right now.” In college, my communication studies professor brought in a guest lecturer who was a local anchorman. He’s no longer in the business but most of his message was about communicating. The only thing that truly resonated with me was that phrase. It’s what I say when I’m told “no” in my professional endeavors. It reminds me to stay focused.
Favorite mentor: Too many to name. It takes a village!
Favorite Hobby: Relaxing on the beach. Is that a hobby?
One book everyone should read: “The Little Engine That Could” by Watty Piper.
Thankful for: Family and friends that become family.
Favorite place to travel: Europe
Do you have any pets?: Coco Chanel, a Lhasa Apso/Miniature poodle. She was born in Georgia but I purchased her when I lived in Florida. I was working at the NBC station in West Palm Beach at the time. It was an impulsive purchase but the best thing I’ve ever done! I’m a huge dog lover. FYI, she does not represent her name. She is not fancy and far from couture.
A favorite tradition: Thanksgiving dinner with family!
