ESPN’s award-winning “My Wish” series returns for its 17th season on Sunday, July 14, with a star-studded lineup that includes Tua Tagovailoa, Katie Ledecky, Freddie Freeman, the Duke Men’s Basketball team and the San Francisco 49ers. This year’s series promises more unforgettable moments, showcasing the resilience and dreams of young fans whose wishes come true.
While the finished segments that air on SportsCenter capture the essence of these special days, there are countless behind-the-scenes moments that illustrate the dedication and passion of the ESPN Features Unit and the producers that make it happen. Here’s a glimpse into the stories behind the camera, shared by the producers who bring these wishes to life.
Levi’s Wish with the San Francisco 49ers
Producer: Nick Hetherington
(airs Sunday, July 14)
Levi, a young boy in remission after a battle with cancer, had his wish granted by the San Francisco 49ers, who went above and beyond to make his day unforgettable.
“The 49ers staff, led by Senior Manager for Community Relations Saya Lindsay, were incredible,” says Hetherington. “They tailored the visit to Levi, even creating a special menu of his favorite food and having him inaugurate a new tradition in their 49ers Wish Garden by planting strawberries.”
One of the day’s highlights was Levi catching passes from Brock Purdy while being guarded by Nick Bosa. “There was so much we couldn’t include in the final feature, but the 49ers truly rolled out the red carpet for Levi and his family,” Hetherington adds.
Laura’s Wish with Katie Ledecky
Producer: Alex Nolan
(airs Monday, July 15)
For Laura, a 10-year-old swimming enthusiast sidelined by cancer, meeting seven-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky was a dream come true. What many viewers won’t see is a touching moment that happened after filming.
“One of the things we learned about Laura was her love for chocolate milk,” says Nolan. “Laura adored the previously recorded video of Katie swimming across the pool while balancing a glass of chocolate milk. We celebrated the end of her wish day together by drinking chocolate milk in fun island-themed mugs with straws!”
A particularly poignant behind-the-scenes moment occurred when Laura, for the first time since her surgery, climbed out of the pool without using the stairs. “Her parents and herself were amazed,” Nolan recalls. “It was a small but powerful moment that showed her strength and renewed confidence.”
Bradee’s Wish with Duke Men’s Basketball
Producer: Damien Esparza
(airs Tuesday, July 16)
Basketball game against their biggest rivals, the North Carolina Tar Heels.
“Filming in Cameron Indoor Stadium was a challenge due to its size and the packed crowd,” Esparza shares. “We had to constantly shift and reposition to get clear shots without blocking fans’ views. Despite the obstacles, we captured all the significant moments of the evening.”
Yisroel’s Wish with Tua Tagovailoa
Producer: Eric Dowling
(airs Wednesday, July 17)
Yisroel, a passionate Miami Dolphins fan who cannot play football due to his health condition, wished to spend the day with his favorite NFL team.
“Yisroel is a dedicated Dolphins fan, always watching his hometown team when he can,” Dowling explains. “The chance to throw the football with Tua Tagovailoa is something he will cherish forever. It’s a dream every lifelong sports fan can relate to.”
Gunnar’s Wish with Freddie Freeman
Producer: Jen Chafitz
(airs Thursday, July 18)
Gunnar, a young baseball enthusiast, was thrilled to meet his favorite player, Freddie Freeman of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
“Gunnar’s excitement was palpable,” Chafitz recalls. “His jaw literally dropped when Freddie surprised him in the Dodgers’ dugout. They played catch on the field, and Freddie presented Gunnar with a signed game jersey. It was a magical moment.”
These behind-the-scenes stories highlight the dedication and heart that goes into making each “My Wish” segment special. As Chris Connelly, the series’ longtime host, aptly puts it, “We’re all grateful for the chance to show these wishes restoring hope and happiness to those who’ve had to endure so much.”
