For Christine Newby, a Lead Producer Editor for ESPN, and Blake Bolden, NHL Reporter, the NHL Player Media Tour is more than just an annual event — it’s a labor of love. Over two packed early September days in Las Vegas, they collaborate to produce one of the most popular segments of the tour: the on-ice demo station, where hockey’s greatest players show off their elite skills.

Newby, who just celebrated her 12th year with ESPN, beams as she talks about the experience of being on the ice with some of the NHL’s biggest stars.

“It’s my favorite two days of work all year,” she says, lacing up her skates. Her passion for hockey is deeply rooted, having grown up watching games with her dad, Walter Newby III. As a child, she dreamt of playing for the Pittsburgh Penguins. That love for the game has carried over into her professional life, where she now shapes how millions of fans experience hockey.

Bolden, a seasoned player herself who played for four years at Boston College, is the Los Angeles Kings’ Growth and Inclusion Specialist and Pro Scout (the second woman ever to scout in the NHL). Bolden lights up when discussing the opportunity to skate with legends like Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid.

“It’s a privilege,” she says, recalling moments when players like Auston Matthews and Leon Draisaitl demonstrated their signature moves. This year marks Blake’s third time working on the demo station, and her excitement only grows with each season. For her, it’s not just about showcasing skill but offering fans a unique glimpse into what makes these athletes so extraordinary.

At the demo station, the duo meticulously plan each segment. From coordinating the demos that are specific to each player, to planning what equipment is needed to execute the demo – every detail matters. Newby and Bolden work with a four-person crew to capture the footage and after the shoot, Newby handles editing and creating the videos that are featured throughout the NHL season, including on ESPN’s The Point and ABC coverage. Bolden brings her expertise as both a player and reporter, giving fans insight into the techniques that define NHL stars. Their collaboration has become a hallmark of the event, with players frequently naming the demo station as one of their favorites.
