ESPN’s Legacy of Introducing New Sports Leagues Continues with TGL and LOVB Launches

This week's debuts of the innovative golf and volleyball leagues on ESPN platforms extend a tradition originating in the 1980s as this timeline illustrates

This week, ESPN platforms are presenting back-to-back league debuts. TGL, the innovative TMRW Golf League, teed off Tuesday night in primetime on ESPN, while LOVB, the new League One Volleyball women’s professional league, begins tonight with the historic LOVB First Serve (Salt Lake facing Atlanta) at Gateway Center Arena in Center Park, Ga., at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

These debuts are just the latest examples of new sports leagues and events premiering on ESPN platforms – something that has been a part of ESPN’s programming history since the original network launch in 1979.

FOLLOW THE LOVB AND TGL ON ESPN PLATFORMS THROUGH RESPECTIVE SPRING CHAMPIONSHIPS
The inaugural LOVB season on ESPN platforms continues through the LOVB Finals Championship match on April 13. In all, ESPN+ features four matches over three days (Wednesday-Friday), including U.S. standouts and two-time Olympic medalists Micha Hancock and Jordan Thompson leading LOVB Houston against Team USA’s Stacy Sykora and LOVB Austin (aka the “LOVBhorns”) on Thursday at 8 p.m. 2025 Schedule 

The TGL season on ESPN continues through the SoFi Cup – a best-of-three Finals Series on March 24-25. Next Tuesday, Jan. 14 (7 p.m., ESPN), will feature the TGL debut of Tiger Woods and his Jupiter Links team (Kevin Kisner, Max Homa and Tom Kim) vs. Los Angeles Golf Club (Collin Morikawa, Sahith Theegala, Tommy Fleetwood, and Justin Rose). 2025 Schedule
