Scott Gustafson on what fans can expect from ESPN’s Opening Day coverage
The coordinating producer is in his first year leading ESPN's MLB storytelling: "Our job is to tell the story of the players and teams while making each game an enjoyable watch."

As ESPN kicks off another MLB season today, its production team is under new leadership with Scott Gustafson, Coordinating Producer, at the helm, reporting to Mark Gross, SVP, Sports Production.
Though this is his first year leading ESPN’s MLB coverage, Gustafson is no stranger to the game or the company. With nearly 25 years at ESPN and over 15 years involved in baseball coverage, Gustafson brings deep passion and a commitment to delivering the best possible experience for fans.
Gustafson shares what excites him most about his new role, what fans can expect from ESPN’s Opening Day coverage, his favorite Sunday Night Baseball memory and more.
This is your first season leading ESPN’s MLB production. What excites you most about taking on this role?
The people. Our MLB team is filled with dedicated men and women who truly care about what we put on air each week. My years here have taught me firsthand what a passionate group this is and how much they love the game, both on-camera and behind the scenes.
Opening Day is always a big moment in baseball. What should viewers be on the lookout for in ESPN’s coverage?
Opening Day marks the start of a new season, filled with optimism and fresh opportunities. It’s a day of excitement, anticipation and hope as all teams dream of a World Series title. This year is no exception. We begin with two postseason teams from 2024 — the Brewers and the Yankees — with Joe Buck returning to call the action (3 p.m. ET). In the second game of our doubleheader, the reigning World Champion Dodgers begin their campaign to secure back-to-back titles (Detroit Tigers at Dodgers, 7 p.m.).
During Baseball Tonight, we’ll air full pregame festivities as the Dodgers and their fans (along with a few special guests) celebrate last season’s championship.
How will ESPN’s MLB coverage continue to stand out?
The mission is and always has been to serve the fan. ESPN has delivered that with its MLB coverage for over 36 seasons. We will continue to document the game, tell great stories and have fun. As [SNB play-by-play commentator] Karl Ravech noted, “It’s a Sunday night for most people, which means work the next day. It’s a way to ease them into their work week by having fun.” That’s always our goal.
Our job is to tell the story of the players and teams while making each game an enjoyable watch. Our announcing team provides insight, answers the “why” and delivers compelling analysis backed by data. [Sunday Night Baseball Reporter, Senior Writer] Buster Olney adds access with in-game manager interviews, behind-the-scenes stories and unique moments from the stands that make each broadcast special.
